My Dog Gets Sick From People Food

The other day, a concerned dog mom emailed to ask what to do. Her dog got a little belly ache from from eating vegetables. She was confused since she knew vegetables were a healthy addition to her dog’s diet.

After talking with her a bit more, we concluded her little one just had too many veggies all at once. Too much stress on the dog’s GI system.

We worked through it and found a better approach.

When introducing any new food, take it slow. For example, if you have a small dog, you may only want to try a teaspoon of the new item. If you have a big dog, it may be a tablespoon or two. If he does okay with the new food, you might increase to 2 teaspoons / 2 tablespoons after a couple days, and continue the trend like this in very small increments until you reach the serving size that is appropriate for your dog.

It is always better to work your way up, instead of giving too much of a new food, and seeing your dog get sick. This leads not only to your dog being uncomfortable, but it also scares many dog parents away from including healthy new vegetables into their dogs’ diets.

With patience and persistence, you and your dog can reap the many rewards of a great diet. One of the best ones is seeing your dog live a healthy, well nourished life.
