Why Dogs Need Produce

Summer brings great options like squash and zucchiniWe know fruits and vegetables are good for us, but what about our dogs?

Although generally dogs remain ravenous for meat, many dogs also love fruits and vegetables as part of their diet. And indeed they should eat these things.

Not only do fruits and vegetables have many nutrients, they also represent ingredients that dogs’ ancestors ate as part of their prey.

When a wolf or any other predator hunts a prey animal and eats it, they are not just eating the meat of that animal. They are also eating whatever remains in the prey animal’s digestive tract.

For example,  let’s say a wolf hunts and kills a rabbit. Prior to becoming dinner for the wolf, the rabbit likely ate a variety of greenery. In turn, when the wolf dines on the rabbit, that wolf is also eating partially digested greenery that remains inside the rabbit.

We must remember that although meat is a main staple for dogs, we also need to include other ingredients that are typically eaten by prey animals — like fruits and vegetables.

If your dog is new to eating fruits and veggies, it is important to ease into it and also begin with cooked produce. This is a gentler version, and more closely resembles the partially digested items found in prey animals.
