Feeding Dogs as Family Members

homemade dog foodThankfully, many people view their companion animals as members of the family. This is evident from the billions of dollars people spend each year on their pets.  It’s also quite clear as I talk with pet parents, watch people and their pets together, and see what people will do for their pets. We love them, care for them, want the best for them, and when we lose a beloved pet, we are devastated.

In the meantime, while we have them, it is vital for us to make a connection between their diet and their health. In our busy lives, sometimes we get overwhelmed and don’t feel like we have the time to address our pets’ diets. After all, aren’t we doing a good job when we buy the cans and bags with big pictures of beef, eggs, chicken and fresh vegetables on the front?

But those pictures don’t always clearly reflect what’s really in the package, and besides, would you let your other family members eat that?

With a little practice, we can not only see our pets as family, but act on that feeling by feeding them like family members. We can do this using simple and whole foods we already purchase at the store.

Often, I will make a big pot of chicken soup, loaded with fresh chicken, vegetables and potatoes, and my dog and I will both work off it for the week.

This is an example of how easy it can be to feed your dog — and yourself — well.  All it takes is a little planning and before you know it, it’s second nature.

As I cook for my dog, I feel a sense of truly taking care of her. I know what goes into her meals. I have control over quality and ingredients. I believe it even increases the bond between us, as I am doing something important for her, and she is enjoying the results. Sharing food is one of the most ancient, communal acts around. It will bring the two of you closer together, and you will truly be caring for your dog as a family member.

Rather than waiting until your dog develops health issues from eating bad food over time, feeding him or her well now will save suffering and vet bills later.

Joining us on DogFoodCoach.com will help you learn how easy and fun it is to cook for your dog.
